High Hopes

Pie in space, the sucessful Kickstarter.

Pie in Space, my first “big” project, grew from a passion for aerospace. Taking countless hours of planning, designing, and raising money this project has had a huge impact on the person I am today.

For this project, I sent a payload consisting of a GoPro, GPS tracking device, and apple pie into the stratosphere. To accomplish this, the payload was connected to a high-altitude weather balloon for the accent and parachute to slow its fall. We launched from Eastern Washington from which the balloon rose more than 100,000 feet before bursting in the low air pressure. Then, using the GPS transmitter, we tracked its movements and recovered the payload and pie in a dusty field. You may ask why I did something like this and to be honest I don't have a real answer. I just thought it would be a fun project and applied my engineering skills and enlisted the help of others through Kickstarter to make it a reality.

You can see a video of the flight here.
